The Illinois River Biological Station (IRBS) is at the forefront of aquatic ecosystem research, monitoring, and education. For decades, IRBS has provided critical insights into the health and dynamics of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Our work has informed state and federal management policies, supported invasive species control, and improved sportfish management.
Our upcoming projects include:
- Ensuring the continuation of long-term fish community and water quality monitoring, which has been ongoing since 1957.
- Advancing tools for managing invasive species like invasive carp to protect native fish populations and habitat.
- Supporting the construction of a state-of-the-art visitor center, biological research facility, and educational hub in Havana, IL, designed to boost STEM education, regional economic development, and community engagement.

Position Overview
IRBS is seeking a passionate and results-oriented Stewardship & Donor Development Specialist to spearhead two pivotal campaigns:
Sustaining Monitoring and Research:
- Collaboratively seek $3 million in annual private funding from foundations, corporations, and individuals to support IRBS’s research programs that address the most pressing challenges in aquatic ecosystem management. Your work will directly enable:
- The continuation of groundbreaking invasive species research and control efforts.
- Management of native sportfish populations using cutting-edge tools.
- Long-term monitoring of fish communities and water quality, ensuring data-driven policy decisions.
Facility Development:
- Help seek and apply for private funds for a transformational project — a combined visitor center, research station, and educational facility in Havana, IL. This facility will:
- Enhance hands-on STEM education for K–12 students and community members.
- Provide vital space for research, public engagement, and training.
This role will significantly impact ecosystem conservation, regional economic growth, and STEM education for generations to come.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop tailored fundraising strategies to meet the goals and objectives of the Illinois River Biological Station and the Prairie Research Institute.
- Develop and/or enhance application tools for donor research and data management, and analyze data to support fundraising strategies and donor engagement.
- Conduct research using various analytical resources to analyze donor prospect information. Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations on research.
- Identify, engage, and cultivate relationships with individual donors, corporate sponsors, and grant organizations to meet private funding goals.
- Manage donor relations and stewardship activities, and support fundraising efforts by identifying funding sources and developing proposals.
- Craft compelling proposals, presentations, and campaign materials to secure funding and build long-term support.
- Collaborate with staff to ensure alignment with research goals and community engagement priorities.
- Collaborate with the University Foundation team to identify and coordinate funding opportunities.
- Perform other duties as needed to further the mission and goals of the Survey, PRI, and the University of Illinois.
- Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, business, social science, or related field. Alternate degree fields may be considered depending on the nature and depth of experience as they relate to this role.
- Experience in non-profit fundraising, grant writing, and donor development with demonstrated success in securing major gifts or grants.
- A master’s degree in communications, business, or social science is preferred.
- Knowledge of environmental sciences, aquatic research, or STEM education is highly desirable.
- Creativity and Strategic thinking to develop and implement innovative funding solutions are required.
- Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision.
- Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills.
- Proficiency in commonly employed software and databases.
- A valid driver’s license.
Salary: $30 – $40 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
Appointment: This position is classified as an Academic Hourly position with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This position does not offer health benefits or retirement benefits. The work of this position will take place in a remote/hybrid environment with occasional visits to the Illinois River Biological Station in Havana, Illinois.
This position offers hourly work, up to 40 hours per week.
